What Does It Cost to Start a Package Forwarding Business?

Where the money goes in a package forwarding business — warehouse, freight, customs, delivery, software, staff, marketing — and how a franchise changes it.

"How much does it cost?" is the first question most people ask about starting a package forwarding business. The honest answer is that it depends on your market, your volumes and how much you build yourself. What we can do is show you where the money goes, so you can plan with your eyes open.

Costs fall into two groups: what you spend before your first customer (setup) and what you spend for every parcel and every month (running costs).

Setup costs

US warehouse

If you build independently, this is usually the largest item: a US company or presence, a lease, shelving, scales, scanners, packing materials, insurance and staff. You also pay for the time it takes to design receiving, storage and dispatch processes that work without errors.

Software

A forwarding business needs a customer cabinet, an admin panel, warehouse scanning, payments and notifications — and ideally mobile apps. Building this means hiring developers for many months. Off-the-shelf tools rarely cover the full workflow, and connecting several of them creates its own costs.

Brand and website

A name, logo, website, pricing pages, terms of service and help content in your customers' language. Plus the legal setup of your local company.

Local launch

Agreements with a customs broker and a delivery partner, a payment provider, and an initial marketing budget to win your first customers.

Running costs

Air freight

Usually your biggest per-parcel cost. You pay per kilogram for consolidated shipments. Rates depend heavily on volume: small, irregular shipments cost much more per kilogram than regular weekly flights. This is why new independent operators often struggle with margins at the start.

Customs and clearance

Brokerage fees, documentation and, depending on the country, duties or VAT on parcels above the duty-free threshold (usually paid by the customer, but your team handles the paperwork).

Last-mile delivery

Fees to the local courier or postal network for delivery to pickup points, lockers or doors.

Warehouse operations

Staff time to receive, weigh, store, consolidate and pack parcels, plus packing materials and storage space.

Payments, support and marketing

Card processing fees, customer support staff and ongoing marketing to keep new customers coming.

Where your revenue comes from

Most forwarders earn on:

  • a price per kilogram of shipped weight (with a minimum weight and a volumetric rule for large, light boxes);
  • extra services — consolidation, repackaging, photos of the contents, electronics checks, insurance;
  • storage fees after a free storage period.

Your margin is the difference between what customers pay per kilogram and what each kilogram costs you to fly, clear and deliver — so transport rates and operational efficiency matter more than anything else.

The biggest hidden cost: time

The line item people underestimate most is time to launch. Months spent setting up a warehouse, negotiating freight and building software are months without revenue — while costs are already running.

How a franchise changes the picture

A franchise moves the heaviest setup items off your plate:

Cost item Independent With the Pesoto franchise
US warehouse Build and staff it Existing Delaware warehouse handling
Software and apps Develop or assemble Full platform and native apps included
Air transport Negotiate from zero volume Developed scheme with competitive rates
Brand Build from scratch Established Pesoto brand
Know-how Learn by trial and error Operational support and a personal manager

What remains yours: your local company, customs and delivery partners in your country, your team and your marketing — the parts that depend on knowing your market.

The exact franchise terms depend on your market and plan. Request the franchise terms and your personal manager will share the full conditions and pricing for your country.
